The congregation at Cascade View Presbyterian Church has voted unanimously to approve Rev. Luke Hyder as their new pastor. He began working on March 1. Luke has been interviewed by the Commission on Ministry, and will be recommended to the Northwest Coast Presbytery at the meeting in May. Congrats!
Luke P. Hyder spent most of his childhood in southeastern Washington and central California, baptized and nurtured in the Christian faith as the oldest son of a Presbyterian pastor. His life-adventure following Jesus Christ was sparked as a camper at Calvin Crest, in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, where he later worked for several summers. In 2001, Luke graduated with a BA in Music and English from Whitworth University in Spokane where he also met and married the love of his life, Marla (nee Meekhof), who now is a college writing professor and a fantastic mom.
After serving First Presbyterian Church of Spokane for three years as their Director of Contemporary Worship, Luke pursued graduate education and received a Master of Divinity degree from Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, CA, graduating in 2006 with a concentration in Worship, Theology and the Arts through Fuller's innovative Brehm Center.
It continues to be his passion to see God's people enrich and expand their worship life together, deepening the intentionality of their action, broadening the creativity of their expression, and widening the scope of their love.
In the Fall of 2006, Luke was ordained to the Ministry of Word & Sacrament in the PC(USA), and joined the staff of First Presbyterian Church of Libertyville, IL (in the northern suburbs of Chicago) as their Associate Pastor for Worship & Evangelism. He is grateful to God for the blessing of nearly ten years of ministry with that congregation, where they started and grew a new worship service together, served their neighbors in the community, and cared for one another as a family of faith.
Their years in the Midwest have seen them enter many new phases of life, the most significant being parenthood. Their daughter Eliza was born in 2010 and is the delight of their hearts. Spending time together as a family is their favorite way to relax, whether they are having adventures traveling or staying at home. Luke enjoys many outdoor activities—especially Ultimate Frisbee!--and loves watching and discussing good movies. He is also a composer and singer-songwriter, with two songs published in a recent worship resource, Psalms for All Seasons (FaithAlive, 2012), and a new CD of original songs entitled “Pilgrim Miles” that has just released.
“I am excited and deeply honored by the opportunity to come alongside the Cascade View Presbyterian Church family, and to seek with you the life of worship and mission to which God is calling us. Thank you, and God bless you.”
