Elisabeth J. Shepping, RN (1880-1934) was one of the very first missionaries, a lesser-known female nurse, commissioned to Joseon by Southern Presbyterian Church in the USA. Shepping was born in Wiesbaden, Germany; she immigrated to America at age 9 and studied nursing. When she was 32 years old, she took a mission from the Presbyterian Church to Korea. From 1912 to 1934, in the days of Japanese colonial period, for 22 years until her death and burial in Joseon soil, she worked as a nurse in the greater areas of Gwangju, which was one of the poorest region in Korea with no access to medical care.
