Honduras Delegation Updates

Rev. Lora Burge (under care of NWC Presbytery and Whidbey PC before she was ordained in the Chicago Presbytery) arrived in Honduras on Jan 24, 2018 as a member of a delegation of 50 faith leaders and social justice advocates from the U.S., Canada, Colombia, Mexico, El Salvador, Haiti, and Argentina. They are responding to the urgent request of Honduran religious partners for accompaniment and international presence at a time of turmoil and bloodshed. Widespread protest of the legitimacy of the Nov. 26, 2017 presidential election resulted in brutal military and police attacks and arrests of human rights defenders, land activists, journalists, and members of the clergy. More than 30 have been killed and hundreds injured. The U.S. and Honduran faith leaders seek peaceful resolution to the violence. Lora wrote, “All is going well so far. Very busy. We participated in the celebration of a mass and march today. We are told that our being here is making a difference and keeping people safer. Prayers are welcome.” You can follow the delegation’s blog at https://rootcausesdelegation.wordpress.com/
