Rev. Hughes Welcomed

The congregation of First PC Quilcene welcomes Rev. Dennis Hughes to serve as their temporary pastor.  Rev. Scott Schaefer resigned at the end of February.

The Rev. Dennis Hughes is a graduate of Pomona College (B.A.), Yale University Divinity School (M.Div.), and the University of Notre Dame (Ph.D. in Theology, specializing in pastoral theology and liturgy). He was ordained by the Presbytery of Albany, N.Y., in 1969 and has served parishes in Corinth, NY, South Bend, IN, La Junta, CO, at Newport in Bellevue, WA, and at Northminster, Seattle.  While at Newport, he was an editorial consultant for the Book of Common Worship. In the mid-1990s, Dennis served as Associate for Worship for the Presbyterian Church Mission Agency in Louisville, where he oversaw the creation of worship resources. Among his tasks, he staffed the ecumenical committee that produced El Himnario, our Spanish language hymnal, and staffed and was a member of the writing team for the Book of Occasional Services. He also edited the journal, Reformed Liturgy & Music.

Dennis was Stated Clerk for Seattle Presbytery for over 16 years, about half of the time serving alongside Corey Schlosser Hall. He has been a member of the adjunct faculty in the School of Theology and Ministry at Seattle University since the 1980s, teaching undergraduate Psychology and Religion and seminary level Presbyterian History and Polity courses. He has published articles on various topics in the field of liturgical studies and pastoral theology as well as sermons and poetry. Dennis has served on numerous General Assembly committees, and is currently co-chair of the ongoing Episcopal/Presbyterian Bilateral Dialogue Committee, and on the Presbyterian Church’s Advisory Committee to produce a 25th Anniversary revision of the Book of Common Worship.

After retiring in 2013, he has enjoyed post-retirement service as Interim Pastor, First Presbyterian Church, Port Townsend, and now as Transitional Pastor, First Presbyterian Church, Quilcene. He and his wife, Ann, celebrated their 52nd wedding anniversary in August, and are the parents of three children and the proud grandparents of one granddaughter. Best of all: they all live very close by!
